Every year a residential is organised for all year 8 pupils to Shannaghmore, Newcastle, Co Down.
The school believes that a period, however short, spent away from the home and the school environment is of great value. Young people learn to live and co-operate with one another and react in a positive way to challenges, new experiences and situations through which they discover new capabilities, gain confidence, develop self-esteem and learn to socialise.
Pupils take part in activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, wet and dry bouldering, orienteering, treasure hunting, beach walks and generally living and working together.
Pupils who, prior to the residential, only know those in their class, soon find themselves forming new friendships. On return to school, staff notice how much class cohesion and pupil interaction improve.
